Construction Update
June, 24th 2023:
We are at the end of the third week of construction! The work crews have been removing walls, excavating the ground, and laying the foundation for the new additions. For this first construction update, I would like to introduce you to our subcontractors, the Flier Brothers Independent Excavators, who have a special connection to the mission of Living Stones Academy.
Jason and his brother, Todd, have been excavating together for over 11 years and together have more than 90 years of experience in breaking ground in order to build foundations for all kinds of buildings. They were delighted to receive the construction bid so that they could prepare the earth for the foundation of the two new classrooms and large multi-purpose room.
Jason’s son Dave Flier, is also in the excavation business and his children are current students at Living Stones Academy. In the first week of construction, Dave took several days off from work with the Michigan Department of Transportation in order to help do his part. David was seen jumping from front loaders, back-hoe excavators to semi-trucks, always greeting everyone with a kind smile. Together, the Fliers made a ton of progress in just a few days.
Jason, Todd and Dave are not just happy to do this work for LSA, but they also have a deep care and love for the school. Jason recently shared with me that over 35 years ago he and his wife went on an international service trip with Youth with a Mission for a year after getting married; since that experience, the Lord has given them a heart of hospitality for children from around the world. More recently, their children all moved out of their home and the house was simply too quiet. After six months, the Fliers will again be hosting several more international students from several different countries in their home. If you see the Fliers around, make sure to say “hello” and thank them for their work!

Here are a few other updates on the building:
The foundation for the two classrooms on the east side of the building will be complete soon and the walls will start to go up shortly!
Temporary walls were added to the old library and a former classroom to both limit dust and add security to the rest of the building.
The north side of the school, where the new multipurpose room will be located, is now exposed to the elements – and nearly completely gutted.

Thanks for staying tuned to the ongoing progress of the final stage of our Creating Belonging construction project. Again, we are so grateful for you and for all of our supporters who have enabled Living Stones Academy to begin construction debt free after raising $4.8 million dollars. Thanks for partnering with us to expand this community where every child may be seen, known, and loved – and where each child may be a part of a community where they belong.
